The Early Stage In the early stage of the disease of alcoholism a person will begin the process of depending upon alcohol. The Middle Stage When considering the alcoholism stages, the middle stage is the juncture at which a person begins to need and desire alcohol more intensely. The individual will start consuming larger amounts of alcohol at one time. The individual clearly will start to lose control over his or her drinking. Moreover, the body will begin to lose its ability to process alcohol effectively. As a result, a person's tolerance to alcohol will drop and he or she will become intoxicated far more rapidly. Finally, withdrawal symptoms associated with alcohol will become significantly more severe. The End Game The alcoholism stages advance to the end stage if left untreated. Here the individual becomes obsessed with drinking. He or she does so to the exclusion of all other people and all other aspects of his or her life. People around the person with the disease readily can see that there is a serious problem. The mental, emotional and physical health of the person with alcoholism seriously erodes at this juncture.
